CPAP Supplies: How Often Should You Replace Your Mask, Tubing and Filters?

CPAP only works if the mask seals and the air is clean. Cushions stretch, tubing cracks and filters clog, often slowly enough that you don't notice. Most insurance plans, including Medicare, pay for regular replacement supplies, so there's usually no reason to keep using worn-out parts.
Typical replacement schedule
This is the schedule Medicare follows, and many other plans use something similar. Your plan's exact allowances may differ.
| Supply | How often |
|---|---|
| Full face mask (frame) | 1 every 3 months |
| Full face mask cushion | 1 per month |
| Nasal mask (frame) | 1 every 3 months |
| Nasal mask cushion | 2 per month |
| Nasal pillows | 2 per month |
| Tubing (standard or heated) | 1 every 3 months |
| Disposable filters | 2 per month |
| Reusable filter | 1 every 6 months |
| Headgear | 1 every 6 months |
| Chinstrap | 1 every 6 months |
| Humidifier water chamber | 1 every 6 months |
Signs it's time to replace something
- Mask leaks or you're tightening the straps more than before: the cushion is worn.
- Red marks or skin irritation on your face.
- Headgear that won't hold its shape or Velcro that no longer grips.
- Cloudy, cracked or discolored tubing or water chamber.
- Gray or dirty filters, or a dusty smell from the machine.
- Waking up with a dry mouth or headache, which can mean leaks are reducing your therapy.
How insurance covers CPAP
For Medicare, the CPAP machine itself is usually a monthly rental for 13 months, after which you own it. In the first 3 months, Medicare also requires proof you're using it: generally at least 4 hours a night on 70% of nights during a 30-day period, plus a follow-up visit with your doctor. Your machine's usage data is used to show this.
Replacement supplies are covered on the schedule above with a current prescription. You pay your plan's share, such as Medicare's 20% coinsurance. Florida Medicaid plans and most private insurers cover CPAP supplies too, each with their own limits.
Cleaning between replacements
- Daily: wipe the mask cushion with mild soap and water or unscented CPAP wipes. Empty and air-dry the water chamber.
- Weekly: wash the mask, headgear, tubing and chamber in warm soapy water. Rinse and air-dry out of direct sunlight.
- Use distilled water in the humidifier to prevent mineral buildup.
